Prewar Blues

John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson (I) Blues Archive 12

John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson (I) Vol.1 1937 - 1939

Leadbelly Vol 2 1940 - 1943

DOCD-5227

The selection of Leadbelly titles on this Document Records CD represents some of the sessions that have since made Leadbelly a popular success.

easy rider - new york city - worried blues

don‘t you love your daddy no more? - you can‘t lose-a me cholly - grey goose (1) - stew ball - take this hammer - can‘t you line ‘em - ham an‘ eggs - ha ha thisaway - little sally walker - redbird - christmas song - skip to my lou - you can‘t lose me cholly - take this hammer - haul away, joe - rock island line - ol‘ riley - corn bread rough - old man - on a monday - john henry - how long - (good night) irene (1) - (good night) irene (alt.) - ain‘t you glad - good morning blues

After a series of false starts and blind alleys in the first few years after his release from Angola Penitentiary in 1934, Leadbelly‘s career had begun, by the beginning of the 1940‘s to settle comfortably into the activity surrounding the burgeoning urban folk music revival. Although he had severed his ties with John Lomax in 1935, he remained close with Alan Lomax, who continued to record Leadbelly for the Library of Congress as well as arranging for several key commercial sessions. As Leadbelly was beginning to become recognised he was introduced to a man called Moses Asch. Asch was born in Poland in 1905 into a family with political backgrounds and after moving around Europe the family settled in America. This upbringing had an effect on Asch, fostering a lifelong curiosity and tolerence for ideas outside the mainstream. As such Asch found work in the field of electronics and subsequently founded Asch Records in 1939. In May and July 1941 Asch recorded the first of many sessions with Leadbelly. Exploring a previously unrecorded aspect of Leadbelly‘s vast repertory he released "Play Parties in Song and Dance", "Work songs of the U.S.A." and a combined "Work and Play Party Songs".

The titles on this CD come from these sessions, containing the first releases of the folk standards "Take This Hammer", "Rock Island Line" and the first recorded instance of Leadbelly accompanying himself on his original instrument, the concertina or button accordia, on the track "Corn Bread Rough". In another session Leadbelly recorded the previously unreleased "Irene", a track that would posthumously bring him worldwide recognition. An alternative take of "Irene" is also included on this CD with Sonny Terry accompanying on Harmonica.

It is truly unfortunate that on the cusp of commercial acceptance that Leadbelly did not live long enough to witness his dream of popular success.

Leadbelly Vol 5 1938 - 1942

DOCD-5595

The remaining Leadbelly Arc and Library of Congress Recordings. These Leadbelly sessions were recorded in Havers Studio, New York City (1938) and in Washington D.C. (1940 - 1942).

scottsboro boys - noted rider blues - john henry - john henry (2) - eva  - last night in the evening - meeting at the building - when that train comes along - the blood done sign my name - witness for my lord - soldier in the army of my lord - outshine the sun - way over in the promised land - must i be carried to the sky on flowered beds of ease? - bottle up and go - don‘t you love me no more? - the gallows song - ham & eggs  - bottle up & go (fragment) - how long (w. sonny terry & brownie mcghee) - t. b. blues

The sessions on this Leadbelly CD were recorded in Havers Studio, New York City (1938) and in Washington D.C. (1940 - 1942).

During this time Leadbelly was recording and socialing with the political/urban folk scene. This is shown on the first track on this CD "Scottsboro Boys" reflects Leadbelly‘s political awareness in which he tells the story of a group of black boys who were wrongly accused of a gang rape of two white girls in 1931. The second and third tracks recount the story of "John Henry" a legendary black rail worker who challenged a steam drilling machine to a contest, which he won, but then died of exhaustion.

Alot of the tracks on this CD exemplify the way in which Leadbelly would not only sing a song but also to describe the context of the story and his personal involvement in the song.

Near the end of the CD are the blues tracks "How Long" and "T.B. Blues" recorded with Brownie McGhee on vocals/guitar and Sonny Terry on vocals/Harmonica, which show Leadbelly enjoying the accompaniament of other artists.
